The idea of transferring the Austin Healey Part Lists to CD came after we quickly posted some SU Service Bulletins to the Web and thought that digitizing Healey publications would be an interesting, if not arduous, project. We decided to start with the Healey Parts Lists mainly because they are not available as reprints, but only as originals, occasionally for sale from some auction sites. That idea has now grown into a CD containing a fully searchable database of parts that can be accessed by any modern browser from any computer.
The CD version of the Parts List attempts to keep the look and feel of the old lists while updating their capabilities. We have combined the idiosyncratic nature of the old hardcopy Parts Lists with the capability of computers to quickly search for keywords and parts descriptions/numbers anywhere in the database.
Features of the CD
Fully Searchable
The Parts List is fully searchable using Ksearch software (from Kscripts), a client-side search engine. The entire parts list can be searched by keywords, part numbers or a combination of the two. Because the search is indexed, results are returned instantly.
Printing Capabilities
Every page in the Parts List can be easily printed. Illustration size and line height are controllable, ensuring that you can size every page to fit your printer's characteristics. No more handling original parts lists with greasy fingers: the pages printed from the CD can be used in a shop environment, marked up or discarded as appropriate.
Comprehensive Help
The Help system explains in detail every function of the Parts List, including how to configure, search, print and update the Parts List. An FAQ and a Tips & Tricks section are included as well. Starting to use the Parts List is made easy with a Quick Start section to get you going.
Three Panel Configuration
The main window of the Parts List is divided into three frames: the Menu (on the left) for easy navigation between sections; the Parts Listing (top right) which displays the parts descriptions, numbers and comments; and the Illustration (bottom right), containing the high-quality images of the exploded parts diagrams, which can be zoomed and panned for maximum detail. The Menu System can be hidden and un-hidden with a click of the mouse; this allows you to give more screen space to the Parts Listing and Illustration Frames when needed. Also, the size of all three frames can be sized to suit your individual needs.
Control Panel
A Control Panel is provided to access several commonly-used functions, including Hide Menu System, Reset Illustration Size, Search Parts List, Print Parts List, Configuration and Help.
Parts Lists Idiosyncrasies Reproduced
The original hardcopy version of the Parts List contains errors, duplications and inconsistencies, all of which will be faithfully reproduced in the electronic version. While transferring the Parts List to its electronic counterpart, we have come to realize that the creators of the original work had either a very finely honed sense of humour or a pact with the devil; either way, we are sure they cackled with maniacal laughter after every revision of the Parts Lists was produced. In any event, ours is not to question why, but to present it as it was.
Cookies:The Parts List (both CD and Online versions) uses cookies. Two cookies are used, and both are to save the configuration parameters of the Parts List. You can safely deny the cookies if you want, and it will only mean that your settings will not be saved between sessions; the rest of the CD's functionality is unaffected.
